It's Economics, Stupid
That's it! I've had it! I can't take the stupidity any more. Today's reporting about Exxon Mobil's profit and the Senate's kowtow-ing to ignorant constituents has driven me over the edge. Drudge, you're fired! Senate Republicans, you're fired!

It's simple supply-and-demand economics. How will $100 checks and taxing "windfall" oil company taxes increase fuel supplies? It won't! Drilling in the Alaskan National Wildlife Refuge (ANWR) and in the Gulf of Mexico will, though. Investing in nuclear power will, too.

Again, it's real simple: The gas companies' profit on a gallon of gas is about 9 cents; state and federal tax on a gallon of gas is around 43 cents (higher if you live in NY or CA). So it goes that since Exxon Mobil made a 3-month profit of $8,400,000,000, the US Government definitely brought in way more than that! Where's the outrage at the tax gouging? Huh? Where is it?!

Someone find my indian suit...!

Pray the Psalms
I've heard it said that the Book of Psalms teaches us what it means to pray in a way that God would have us pray and worship.

As a result of pouring out our hearts over lunchtime discussions, BK, Stan and I have agreed to begin 150 days of praying the Psalms. Day 1 begins on May 1st. Check out One-Fifty.blogspot.com for more details.

We encourage anyone to join us. Whether you join us or not, please pray that we -- and you -- will ...
  • ... Desperately seek the Lord's help.
  • ... Depend on God for our daily needs.
  • ... Be sensitive to our sin.
  • ... Have confidence of forgiveness.
  • ... Wait for the Lord.
  • ... Hope in the Lord.

Thank you BK and Stan.

Post Erf Day Truths
You can always count on Joe for the truth. Want the truth about the environment? Check out this annual report by Pacific Research Institute and the American Enterprise Institute that "serves as an instructive antidote for the doom and gloom that normally pervades environmental coverage."

Index of Leading Environmental Indicators 2006

My favorite quote in the publication: "... At the same time the environmental movement increasingly resembles the hapless incipient corpse in Monty Python and the Holy Grail who protests, 'I'm not dead yet!'"

My Delight Is In Her
Heather -- my Hephzibah,

God has designed marriage to be sacrificial, exclusive, life-long, a relationship involving headship of a loving husband and obedience of a submissive wife.

I pray today that I will be the servant-leader that God wants me to be because the way of obedience is the way of blessing. I pray that I will sacrifice and empty myself for you the way Christ sacrificed and emptied Himself for us. And I pray that I will dwell with you, the weaker vessel, giving honor to you as being a joint heir of the grace of God.

My delight is in you.

(In your best Napoleon Dynamite voice) Lucky!
What's the luckiest thing that's ever happened to you? Or what has happened to you that rarely happens to anyone else?
  • In high school gym class I kicked a basketball from half court and it went in the basket -- no backboard, no rim, just net.
  • A songbird pooped on my shoulder when I was in grade school. That doesn't happen every day, does it?
  • I holed a golf ball with my sandwedge from about 70 yards at Eagles Landing Golf Course. BK and Dad witnessed the strategery.

Insane in the Membrane
Albert Einstein defined insanity as "doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results." I've been mulling over that quote all week. Join me in mulling.

Feel Good Story of the Year
Where was I last week when this story aired? I've heard you couldn't have missed this one, but somehow I did.

2008 Presidential Primaries
I'm leaning toward George Allen in 2008. I like this statesman from Virginia who has a consistent voting record against abortion and for secured borders. He co-authored the Balanced Budget Amendment and dependably calls for reduced federal spending. Once GeorgeAllen.com downsizes its "Bloggers for Allen" web button a tad, I'll place it in the margin.

Rudy Giuliani is too spit-and-polish politicky -- emphasis on icky. People will vote for Rudy for the same reason they didn't vote for Alan Keyes: Rudy has name recognition.

Mitt Romney doesn't have enough history for me to put a lot of confidence in him. Bill Frist lost face during the illegal immigrant debate. And, finally, John McCain is a wuss -- a milquetoast.

Easter Is Way Better Than Baseball
In order to set the feeling of this post, please begin by clicking here. Your media player should open and begin playing an .mp3 audio file. You don't have to listen to the whole thing, but sink back in your chair and listen for a while.

Got it? Good.

Those were some of the sounds of my childhood. I remember hot summer evenings spent with my Pappaw watching Harry Caray's Cubbies and giggling with him as he tried to pronounce their pitcher's name -- Assenmacher. (Sorry, Dad, I couldn't find audio of Skip, Chip, Don or Pete). Man, there is nothing much better than baseball and Pappaw -- or baseball and Dad. As I listen now -- as I did then -- to the famous announcer open with his famous slurred greeting of "Hello again everybody. Harry Caray from Wrigley Field on a beautiful day for baseball," all my worries melt away. For just one teeny, tiny moment, all is right in the world. No politics. No strife. No cares. No nothing. All is glorious.

I had the opportunity to share this with my friends Stan and BK today over lunch. As admirers of the great game of baseball, both of them could relate. Whether it's catching a UT game one spring afternoon, attending a Smokies game after dark or travelling to see our favorite pro team play, we all agreed that not much beats hours spent with friends, family, peanuts and the diamond.

For you it may be something different that causes this brief sense of euphoria: A book and a big, puffy chair? Alone by a rolling brook? On a mountain top with the songbirds? Or on a summer night with the cicadas? Wherever it is, I hope you have a place that takes the cares away.

Do you now understand that feeling? If so, you've just begun to scratch the surface of how the Easter season affects me. Christmas? Ho-hum. Thanksgiving? Mmm, maybe. But, Easter? WOW! It is an over-powering, uncontrollable sense of joy. No worries. No nothing. Just joy. All is glorious. And it lasts and lasts -- much longer than a few hours of baseball.

The Cross is glorious. The Resurrection is reassuring. Hosanna! Hallelujah! Praise the LORD! Again, wow!

This is much deeper than a feeling. This is LIVING!

Unique Time
On Wednesday, April 5, there will be a unique time "thing." Sorry, it's early and I can't think of big words.

Anyway, check the clock shortly after one o'clock and you'll see this:

01:02:03 04/05/06

The next time/date celebration will be on my 70th birthday. We'll celebrate 01:23:45 01/23/45. Be there or be square.

It's Ba-ack!
http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=4188363107289074909

Warning: Contains vulgarity and profanity. Or I should just say swearing.* Maybe in the context of this video, I should simply say cussin'.

* If you know BK**, you won't be offended.

** Not that BK swears or anything, but he introduced me to this video years ago; and it's become a family cult classic***.

*** Not that my family revels in cussin'. If anything it's the complete opposite. You'd just have to be there years ago when long-haired BK brought this and forced us to sit in front of the TV to watch 30 minutes of white-trash, mud-slingin', outlaw dancin'.****

**** Oh, nevermind. You know what? Just don't watch it and move on to something else.

Word Strikes His Enemies Down
"They collapse and fall" (Psalm 20:8a, ESV).

"When Jesus said to them, 'I am he,' they drew back and fell to the ground" (John 18:6, ESV).

"Quid judicaturus faciet, qui judicandus hoc facit?" What will he do when he shall come to judge, seeing he did this when he came to be judged? - Augustine.

"And the rest were killed with the sword which proceeded from the mouth of Him who sat on the horse" (Rev. 19:21a, NKJV, emphasis mine).

Over at TheOnion.com
On Wedesday, TheOnion.com reported, "WWE: Illegal Mexican Wrestlers Taking Smackdowns American Wrestlers Don't Want." The writer goes on to say:
The wrestlers, also known as "jobbers," come in search of greater title opportunities and more interesting storylines than those available in their small, unorganized Lucha Libre leagues.

"These masked luchadores are hard-working, energetic, and always willing to learn new skills that Americans consider beneath them - such as being power-bombed from the top turnbuckle or chokeslammed through the announcer's booth," said McMahon on this week's WWE Raw.
I thought the flag burning in an Arizona school was bad, but this takes the cake. How can we do this to our nation? You can read the entire story here.
